skipjackLogooystercookoff.gifGreat News for Skipjack Nellie L. Byrd! Thank You to All Who Helped Make Possible the November 5, 2008 Haulout of Skipjack Nellie L. Byrd! See The Avenue newspaper's November 19, 2008 Relaxer section frontpage!

-- CHESAPEAKE BAY MEMORIES CHARITIES WILL SAVE A NATIONAL TREASURE with TREMENDOUS help from the National Park Service and Maryland Historical Trust! --

Thanks to recent great news of our status as a National Park Service “Save America’s Treasures” Award Recipient—as the only recipient in the state of Maryland—and one of less than 50 winners nationwide, your donation will go even further with the benefit of this 1:1 match!!! This tremendous honor will ensure that the Skipjack Nellie L. Byrd is preserved!

On October 1, 2007, we received even more great news when we were notified by the Maryland Department of Planning that we were awarded a FY2008 Historic Preservation Capital Grant!

Thank you to all residents, businesses, and organizations that helped us match the generous support from these grants to enable us to proceed with saving this National Treasure!

The Skipjack Nellie L. Byrd was built in Oriole, Maryland in 1911.  As one of only 13 surviving skipjacks still working in the oyster-dredging fleet, “Nellie” is one of the oldest skipjacks, in addition to the 2nd largest, still dredging the Chesapeake Bay. As you know, in addition to being the official boat of our beloved Maryland, the Skipjack is a cherished symbol commemorating Chesapeake Bay heritage. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named the fleet, including the Nellie L. Byrd, one of “America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.”

Three years ago we acquired and delivered her to her new berth on Middle River to become the first Baltimore County based Skipjack open to the public for the public benefit. Once her extensive repairs are completed, “Nellie” will serve as a floating classroom for children of all ages as the centerpiece of Chesapeake Bay Memories Charities' Maryland Maritime Treasures Museum.

- CHESAPEAKE BAY MEMORIES CHARITIES 6 YEARS IN REVIEW -

Chesapeake Bay Memories Charities, Inc. (FEIN: 41-2062179) is a 6 year old all-volunteer run Eastern Baltimore County based 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable education organization dedicated to serving and strengthening our community.  A very brief summary of the positive local impact that Chesapeake Bay Memories Charities’ has had on the community includes:

  • 12,500 Baltimore County kids benefited during the past 6 years through scholarships and participation ashore and afloat in our Chesapeake Bay stewardship leadership programs;

  • outstanding educational programs and projects that have been recognized with 110 national, state, and local awards (ex. Save America’s Treasures Award—the only recipient in the state of Maryland—and one of less than 50 winners nationwide);

  • consistently demonstrated dedication to providing public access to experiencing Baltimore County’s waterfront and multi-faceted significance of the Chesapeake Bay to encourage preservation through education.

As we celebrated our 6th anniversary having benefited 12,500 children, Chesapeake Bay Memories Charities has grown from one person’s dream to an organization made possible by more than 22,590 supporters.

2009 looks even brighter, as we move forward on saving National Treasure 1911 Skipjack Nellie L. Byrd thanks to community support, $132,587 from the National Park Service, and $50,000 from the Maryland Historical Trust.  Donations to Chesapeake Bay Memories Charities will go even further with the benefit of this 1:1 match!!! We appreciate your support!

Thank you for supporting Chesapeake Bay Memories Charities!
